October 15 Is the Extended Due Date for 2025 Individual Tax Returns

If you requested an automatic six-month extension for your 2025 individual income tax return, the extended due date is quickly approaching on October 15, 2026. This is the absolute deadline to file Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR. There are no further extensions available.

Please do not wait until the last minute. Our office requires sufficient time to accurately complete and review your tax return to ensure everything is reported correctly. If you bring your documents in too close to the deadline, there may not be enough time to complete your return before the extended due date.

Missing Information Can Delay Your Return

One of the most common reasons tax returns are delayed is missing information. To complete an accurate return, we require all relevant tax forms and records. Missing items often include:

  • Schedule K-1s
  • Brokerage statements
  • Retirement account forms
  • Final wage statements
  • Charitable contribution records
  • Property tax bills
  • Health insurance forms
  • Business income and expense records
Organized files and bookkeeping folders

Without all of your documentation, your return cannot be finalized. If you know that some of your missing information will not be available before October 15, 2026, please contact our office as soon as possible so we can discuss the best option for your situation.

What to Do If Tax Information Is Delayed

If your return cannot be completed by the extended due date because key information is still missing, do not ignore the issue. Contact this office right away. Depending on your specific facts, there may be options to reduce potential filing problems. The most important step is to communicate with us early rather than waiting until the deadline has passed.

The Significant Cost of Late Filing and Interest

Filing or paying late can be costly, as the IRS charges interest and penalties on any unpaid tax. It is critical to get your return completed and filed by the due date, or to speak with us before the deadline if there is a problem.

If your return is filed after the due date, the IRS generally charges a failure-to-file penalty. This penalty is 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or part of a month the return is late, up to a maximum of 25%.

Even with an extension, interest is charged on any tax not paid by the original due date. For your 2025 individual return, interest begins running from April 15, 2026, not the October extended date. The IRS underpayment interest rate is calculated as the federal short-term rate plus 3 percentage points. This rate changes over time, and currently, the interest rate is 7%.

What If Your Return Results in a Refund?

If your extended return results in a refund, the failure-to-file penalty generally does not apply because there is no unpaid tax on which to apply the penalty. However, you should still file your return as soon as possible.

If you are due a refund, you must generally file your tax return within three years from the due date (including extensions) to claim it. Failing to file within this window means you may lose the refund entirely.

Paying Online Is Usually the Safest Option

If you owe tax, paying online is generally the safest and fastest option. It avoids the risk of mail delays, lost envelopes, and potential theft from physical mailboxes. The IRS notes that while mailed returns depend on the postmark date, late delivery can lead to complications with interest and penalties.

Because USPS delivery can experience delays, do not assume that mailing a payment at the last minute will protect you. Online payment is the superior choice. You can make an online IRS payment here: https://www.irs.gov/payments/direct-pay. Most states have similar online payment systems for state taxes.
